The Village of Hamburg was awarded $4.5 million by New York State through the 4th round of the NY Forward program!
The NY Forward program is a comprehensive initiative to invigorate and enliven downtowns in New York’s smaller and rural communities—the types of places found in villages, hamlets, and neighborhood-scale municipal centers. NY Forward builds on the success of New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) by following the same “Plan-then-Act” approach. Now in its fourth year, the NY Forward program has awarded a total of $200 million to 43 communities across the State. The $4.5 million awarded to Hamburg will directly support the planning and implementation needed to attract new businesses, welcome residents and visitors, and enhance overall quality of life for the entire community.

Hamburg Overview
The Village of Hamburg, located in southern Erie County just south of Buffalo, is a historic and charming community known for its walkable downtown, strong civic spirit, and distinctive village character. Eighteenmile Creek and the Anna Mae Bacon Bird Sanctuary add natural beauty and recreational opportunities all within the village center, while convenient access to Interstate 90, U.S. Route 219, the Erie County Fairgrounds, and other regional attractions connects Hamburg to the broader Western New York region.
With support from New York State’s NY Forward program, Hamburg is poised to build on years of public and private reinvestment and further strengthen its role as a destination for commerce, culture, recreation, and community life. The $4.5 million award will support improvements to housing, commercial and historic properties, public amenities, arts and cultural venues, wayfinding, and pedestrian and trail connections. Together, these investments will create a more vibrant, connected, and welcoming year-round downtown while preserving the historic charm and community-centered identity that make Hamburg unique.
